St. John’s Competes at the USF Alumni Invitational

The Red Storm earned four top-10 finishes
TAMPA, Fla. – The St. John's track & field team opened its outdoor season at the USF Alumni Invitational this weekend in Tampa, Fla., at the Lee Roy Selmon Athletic Center.
The Red Storm earned top-10 finishes in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, the 5,000-meter run, the 800-meter dash and the discus, while five athletes posted personal best marks across four events.
Claire Cushing put on a show in the 5,000-meter run, placing second with a 17.27.43 mark in her first race of the outdoor season. Gabriella Caronia continued the Johnnies' impressive performance in the distance events by notching a personal-best time of 7:17.04 for seventh place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
Nora Haugen logged an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter with a 2:08.82 effort.
Jamora Alves started her outdoor season with a fifth-place result in the discus. The Grenada product produced a 50.24-meter heave in the Red Storm's first outdoor meet of the year. Maja Henry made her collegiate debut in the discus, registering a 41.62-meter throw for 15th in the event.
In the shotput, Alves registered a launch of 14.64 meters for 15th place while Juliet Smith tallied a personal-record 13.12-meter throw in her first outdoor meet with St. John's.
Delicia Bent, Brooklyn Chestnut and Cassandra Lemus-Sodji all tied in the 100-meter dash with 11.92-second results. Lemus-Sodji's finish was a career-best. Tea Siehou also provided a personal best effort of 11.95 seconds for 20th in the race. In their 100-meter dash debuts, Ava Spencer and Karese Lloyd each rang up 12.27 and 12.40-second results, respectively.
Amarachukwu Obi paced the 400-meter in 56.26 seconds for 11th place, while Chinenye Onourah followed right behind her for 12th place, sprinting the race in 56.29 seconds. Haugen rounded out the Johnnies' effort in the event with a 56.80-second mark.
Obi led the Johnnies in the 200-meter dash with a finishing time of 24.39 seconds. The Alabama transfer took 19th in the event. Jalen Jackson completed the race in a personal-best 25.22 seconds.
The Red Storm will be back in action for its first home meet of the outdoor track & field season in the Big Hurt on Saturday, March 30th. The annual meet will be held at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y.
