St. John’s Excels at the Mark Young Invitational and the Virginia Challenge

Maja Henry and Juliet Smith took home first place in the discus and shot put
NEW YORK – The St. John's track & field team polished off split-team action for the final time this season on Saturday between the Mark Young Invitational in New Haven, Conn., and the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va.
Mark Young Invitational:
As a team, the Red Storm tallied 81 total points to place fourth at Yale's home meet. Brown took the title with 144 total points, followed by Yale (116) and Stony Brook (107).
Maja Henry took home first place in the discus with a career-record toss of 43.35 meters. Desiree Pagan earned a third-place effort off a 39.47-meter heave.
St. John's claimed the top two spots in the shot put. Juliet Smith and Henry each totaled 13.10-meter throws for first and second place.
In the hammer throw, Martina De Buglio came in second place after producing a 47.35-meter throw. Pagan ended in fourth with a mark of 45.05 meters.
Both Colette Metcalf and Meghan Ladd registered second and third-place finishes in the pole vault. Metcalf gave a 3.45-meter vault to the Johnnies effort for second while Ladd logged a 3.30-meter mark for third.
The Red Storm grabbed two top-five finishes in the 100-meter dash. Karese Lloyd paced the event in a personal record 12.54 seconds for third place. Ava Mabry-Spencer rang up a fourth-place finish of 12.55 seconds.
Leilani Robinson engineered a fourth-place effort in the 800-meter run with a personal-best finishing time of 2:14.87. Ezgi Yasar and Jenna D'Onofrio finished in 14th and 15th place, posting marks of 2:19.47 and 2:21.96, respectively.
The Red Storm saw success in the 200-meter dash as Blessing Assoumany finished the event in seventh place at a collegiate-best 26.39 pace. Mabry-Spencer ended in 10th with a 26.55 mark. Lloyd and Kara Sampath ended with times of 26.57 and 26.82 apiece.
Sophia Leslie added points to the Johnnies' total in the 400-meter hurdles. The freshman logged a career-best time of 1:07.88 to finish sixth.
In the 400-meter run, Sampath set a new personal best result of 1:01.00 for ninth place overall. Assoumany came in 11th after providing a mark of 1:01.34.
Gabriella Caronia continued to shine on the track, finishing the 1,500-meter run in a personal record 4:51.94 for 10th place. Cristina Stanescu added another fifth-place result to her impressive freshman campaign, completing the 5,000-meter run in 19:54.61.
Fia Viklund enjoyed a successful day in New Haven, Conn., ending the triple jump in fourth place. The sophomore produced a career-best jump of 11.56 meters in the event. Ashley Sadler put forth a 5.12-meter leap in the long jump, good enough for ninth place.
Virginia Challenge:
The Johnnies relay squad of Brooklyn Chestnut, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji, Tea Siehou and Delicia Bent picked up a fifth-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay. The group finished the race in a season-best 46.06 seconds.
The Red Storm earned another fifth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The relay team registered a season-best time of 3:44.23 in the race.
Nia Holden ended the 800-meter run with a personal-record 2:11.60 time to finish in ninth place out of 49 other competitors.
Zamira Ysaac notched a season-best mark of 1:03.99 in the 400-meter hurdles, which was good enough for 20th place. Maddie Kelso-Heap registered a finishing time of 1:06.01 to round out the program's effort in the event.
St. John's earned two season-best and one personal-best finish in the 200-meter dash. Chinenye Onourah finished the race in a season-best 24.56 seconds while Bent followed behind her with a 24.67 mark. Chestnut earned a season-best 24.87 effort while Siehou posted a personal-best 25.64 finish.
In the shot put, Jamora Alves placed 16th with a 13.87-meter hurl. Ismini Andreou provided a season-best effort of 52.81 meters for 20th overall in the hammer throw.
Lemus-Sodji placed 21st in the long jump after ringing up a leap of 5.59 meters.
The Red Storm will hit the road again next weekend when it travels to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays from April 26-27.
