Louis Marinaro tossed four shutout innings and struck out four out of the bullpen
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (33-15-1, 13-6) fell to Georgetown, 1-0, in a pitchers' duel on Thursday evening at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
After a blank opening frame, the Hoyas' Kavi Caster hit a solo home run to right field in the second frame to take a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm's Xavier Kolhosser and Georgetown's Cody Bowker battled over the next three innings, both inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the third frame. The Johnnies' starter finished his five frames of work allowing just two hits to go with five strikeouts.
The Hoyas (33-18, 12-6) threatened with one out and runners on first and second in the top of the sixth. Reliever Louis Marinaro worked his way out of the jam with a lineout to left and a groundout to short, keeping the Johnnies' deficit at one.
St. John's saw its best chance in the eighth inning as Anthony Brienza reached on an error and moved to second on the throw. The Johnnies' second baseman moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt, but was as far as he would get before Georgetown shut down the Johnnies' chance.
The southpaw continued to pester the Hoyas for another three innings, including a 1-2-3 top of the eighth stanza. Marinaro closed out his evening with another double play in the top of the ninth. The sophomore finished with four innings of work, surrendering just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.
The Hoyas closed the door in the ninth with another 1-2-3 frame to hold on for the one-run victory. Both teams were held to a combined seven hits in the contest.
The Johnnies will continue its final 2024 conference series against Georgetown on Friday. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is slated for 3 p.m.
