The Friars went to the locker room with a one goal lead but St. John's (5-2-3, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) held the advantage on shots, 6-5.
As the second half began and the rain started to fall, Lauryn Tran sent a cross after a separating cutback but the ensuing strike from Mariani was corralled by Providence's goalkeeper Ellie Thallman.

After the Friars had a few more looks on net the momentum began to shift in the Johnnies' favor as the rain subsided. After Providence failed to clear, Tran slipped a past behind her to a streaking Abby Fitzmaurice who nearly equalized but the rocket of a strike drifted outside the frame.
The chances kept coming as a pair of shots from Levy and an attempt from Athina Sofroniou threatened but were off the mark.
Molly McGlame had the final look at tying the contest as Freya Meadows-Tuson played a long ball that was headed by Levy directly onto the junior's feet. The Hanover, Mass., native loaded up a strike from 16 yards out but the delivery was blocked by a Friars' defender and swung just outside of the right-side post.
The Friars held on in the closing minutes to add to the win column on their home turf in their BIG EAST opener.
St. John's will be back in Queens for Senior Day when it hosts Seton Hall at 1 p.m. from Belson Stadium.
