Red Storm will honor nine seniors prior to Sunday’s match
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team welcomes Seton Hall for Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The BIG EAST contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Marc Ernay and Zach Weiss on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com and admission is free for all fans.
Prior to the game a ceremony will be held to honor the Red Storm's nine seniors- Jailene DeJesus, Jordyn Levy, Nicole Multer, Malene Nielsen, Alyssa O' Brien, Megan Sical, Athina Sofroniou, Alex Taylor and Lauryn Tran. The ceremony will begin at approximately 12:40 p.m.
The Johnnies will look to bounce back after falling on Thursday night at Providence, 1-0. The Red Storm generated a flurry of chances in the final 10 minutes logging five of their 12 shots during that stretch but were unable to find the equalizer at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. DeJesus led the squad with a game-high four shot attempts.
St. John's (5-2-3, 0-1-1) returns to Belson Stadium where it has had a great deal of success this season. The squad is unbeaten on the familiar home turf in Queens in 2024 holding a 4-0-2 record. The Red Storm have scored 12 of its 15 goals while playing at home.
Levy continues to lead the Johnnies offensively netting five goals through 10 games, which marks a career-best for the senior. The forward ranks second in the BIG EAST in total goals (5) and goals per game (0.50). Another veteran, Sofroniou, has guided the charge defensively playing all 900 possible minutes and ranks first on the team in assists with three.
Head Coach Ian Stone brought in his largest freshman class in over a decade and the rookies have paid dividends on the pitch. In back-to-back weeks, Nora Basile and Hope Van Tuyle have taken home BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors after tallying their first collegiate goals. Three other freshman- Madison Mariani, Janelle Sylvestre and Freya Meadows-Tuson have registered points on the year.
St. John's has controlled the all-time series against its local rival in Seton Hall leading, 22-7-1, which dates back 30 years. The Red Storm hold an all-time record of 13-2-1 against the Pirates home and have won 11-straight at Belson Stadium, dating back to Oct. 20, 2000. Last year, Natalie Tavana scored the game-winner to lift the Pirates over the Red Storm, 1-0, at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Seton Hall enters Sunday's match with a 3-6-2 record on the season and a 0-1-1 mark in BIG EAST competition. The Pirates struggled in their last time out falling at Georgetown Thursday afternoon, 5-0. The squad played to a scoreless draw at home against Villanova in its BIG EAST opener on Sept. 22.
2023 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Natalie Tavana leads the Pirates after scoring 12 goals last season. The forward is leading Seton Hall once again this season with two goals and an assist (five points).
The Red Storm will continue a two-game home stint on Thursday Oct. 3, when it welcomes Marquette for a 7 p.m. contest at Belson Stadium.
