St. John’s Sweeps Doubleheader over FDU and Morgan State

The Johnnies move to 6-0 for the first time since 2021
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team defeated FDU and Morgan State on Friday at Cunningham Park in the team's second doubleheader in three days. In the day's first contest, the Johnnies made quick work of FDU, 4-1, before taking down Morgan State, 5-0, in the nightcap.
With the two victories, the Johnnies improve to 6-0 for the first time since 2021, when the squad opened the season with 10 straight wins.
Against FDU, the Red Storm won two of three doubles contests to claim the team point and picked up three victories in solo play to finish off the first half of the twin billing.
Ignacio Vinas and Leonardo Mileikowsky kicked off partner play with a 6-3 triumph over Gryffin Minor and Jorge Alonso-Cortes on the No. 2 court. After FDU evened the score at No. 1 doubles, Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda improved to 5-0 as a duo this season, defeating Andrew Ahn and Andrew Nicolae, 6-3, to clinch the team point.
In singles play, Mileikowsky gave the home squad a 2-0 lead with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 performance on the No. 5 court over Alonso Cortes. FDU earned a point on the No. 3 court to make it 2-1, but the Johnnies quickly bounced back when Carl Gustavsson took down Thomas Linley in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, giving the Red Storm a 3-1 advantage.
Max Amling closed the show at No. 1 singles, gritting out a 6-2, 7-5 win over Joshua Oboniye, finishing off St. John's 4-1 victory over the Knights.
FDU falls to 0-1 this season with the loss. With Friday's win, the Johnnies improve to 10-0 all-time against the Knights.
In the second match, the Red Storm continued their winning ways, dominating all facets of the match en route to a 5-0 sweep over Morgan State in the first ever matchup between the two programs.
The Johnnies took the first two doubles contests off the Bears to claim the team point before winning four solo matches to close out the doubleheader sweep.
Mileikowsky and Vinas' second triumph of the day, a 6-1 performance over Makkijah Brown and Jacob Poole on the No. 2 court, gave the Red Storm momentum in doubles play. The duo is 4-0 in partner play this season. Amling and Gustavsson claimed the team point for St. John's with their second victory as a pair this in 2025, defeating Mikeal Carpenter and Niles Rachal, 6-2.
The success continued in solo action. Sophomore Marco Cinotti improved to 3-0 on the season with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 decision over Brown on the No. 3 court, giving the Johnnies a 2-0 lead. Kaneda, who is now a combined 9-0 in 2025, made it 3-0 St. John's with a two-set victory against Majdi Ben Abdelwahed, 6-3, 6-0.
Vinas picked up his eighth win of the young season, taking down Rachal, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, keeping his undefeated record intact. Up 4-0, Mileikowsky earned the fifth and final point of the afternoon for the Johnnies with a 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Yessine Kerouat at No. 4 singles. The senior from Brussels has also not dropped a match this season, improving to a combined 9-0 on Friday.
St. John's will have a week off before returning to action next weekend for a pair of BIG EAST contests at West Point, N.Y. On Friday, Feb. 7, at 8 a.m., the Johnnies will battle Marquette before facing Georgetown at 8 a.m. the next day from the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
