Luke Orbon, showed out at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and a season-high three runs scored, while Will Cowan went 2-for-3 on the day with two doubles and two runs scored. Jayder Raifstanger contributed two hits and two RBIs with a walk. Jackson Tucker also batted in two runs.
Adam Agresti reached base three times with a trio of scores on Sunday afternoon. The catcher smashed his second homer of the weekend in the sixth inning and walked twice with a pair of RBIs.
Victor Frederick picked up his first career win in Sunday's series finale, only allowing three runs with six strikeouts across six complete innings of work. Kyle Chase earned his first save of the season, pitching for the final three frames of the game.
After Frederick shut down the Black Bears in the top of the first and second innings with a trio of strikeouts, Cowan led off the bottom of the second by doubling down the left field line. Agresti then walked just before Orbon smacked an RBI double into right field, plating Cowan. Anthony Brienza was issued a free pass, loading the bases with no outs ahead of an RBI fielder's choice from Tucker that scored Agresti and gave the Red Storm a 2-0 edge.
In the top of the third stanza, Maine put runners on the corners from a pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt. Drew Reynolds went on to hit a sacrifice fly, bringing a runner across the plate to trail by one, 2-1.
The Black Bears put up two runs in the opening half of the fourth inning. Payton Whitehead bunted for a single and advanced to third base from a sacrifice bunt and another base hit. A fielder's choice brought him home before an RBI single up the middle scored a second run, giving Maine a 3-2 advantage.
The Johnnies tied things up, 3-3, in the home side of the fourth. Following Orbon's second double of the afternoon, which was hit into right-center field, he was advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and sent home on a Jon LeGrande sacrifice fly.
Cowan opened the home half of the sixth inning with a walk, in front of Agresti smashing a two-run homer to left field to give the Red Storm the lead. Orbon then walked and advanced to third across the next two plays, scoring on a Tucker RBI bunt single. Tucker went on to steal second and third base, being plated on a Jared Beebe RBI single that gave the Johnnies a 7-3 advantage.
St. John's posted four runs in the seventh frame. Agresti started the rally with a two-out walk, which was followed by Orbon getting plucked, putting runners on first and second. Brienza then laced an RBI single into center field, scoring Agresti in front of Orbon coming to the plate on a Maine error. Tucker was hit by a pitch after a LeGrande walk, loading the bases for Raifstanger who mashed a two-run single, putting the Johnnies up, 11-3.
The Black Bears tacked on a tally in the top of the eighth from a Dean O'Neill solo homer to trail 11-4.
Maine scored another two runs in the top of the ninth off a two-run shot, but it wasn't enough to overcome its deficit as the Red Storm claimed the series sweep, 11-6.
