St. John’s to Host The Big Hurt

The Red Storm will host its first of two outdoor meets on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team will host its annual outdoor home meet The Big Hurt at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday in Queens, N.Y. The Johnnies' first of two outdoor home meets will kick off at 11 am with the women's long jump.
The Red Storm will host a slew of schools for its annual home meet in Queens, N.Y. Last season, St. John's posted 14 wins across 16 events at DaSilva Memorial Field.
The Johnnies opened their outdoor season last weekend at the USF Alumni Invitational in Tampa, Fla. As a team, the Red Storm posted five top-10 finishes in the 800-meter run, 5,000-meter run, 400-meter dash, shot put and discus in its first outdoor meet of the season.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo shined in her first collegiate outdoor meet, breaking the program record in the 5,000-meter run, coming in third place on a time of 17:01.22 in her first career appearance in the event. The freshman's mark shattered Eva Shield's record of 17:13.0 from the 1985 Colonial Relays by nearly 12 seconds.
Nora Haugen kicked off her outdoor season with a bang at USF, posting a second-place effort in the 800-meter run on a 2:04.71 finishing time. Chinenye Onuorah registered an eighth-place result in the 400-meter dash, with a 54.18-second finish.
In the shot put, Jamora Alves continued her monstrous junior season with a 15.42-meter throw, good enough for fourth place. The next day, the Grenada native, continued her fantastic outdoor debut, logging a seventh-place finish in the discus. The junior produced a heave of 48.41 meters in the event.
Following this weekend's annual home meet, the Red Storm will split up next week between the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships at Ichan Stadium on Friday, April 4 and Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational on Saturday, April 5.
