St. John’s Drops Series-Opening Doubleheader with UConn

Jon LeGrande went 5-for-7 on the day with six RBIs
Jon LeGrande had a great day at the plate, going 5-for-7 with a triple, six RBIs, a run and two stolen bases. Shaun McMillan registered three hits on two doubles and a home with two RBIs and two tallies.
Will Cowan and Jared Beebe also tacked on three hits, a double and an RBI, across both of Friday's contests against the Huskies.
Game 1: St. John's 8, UConn 13
LeGrande led the Johnnies with a pair of hits, a walk, a trio of RBIs, a run scored and two stolen bases in game one of Friday's doubleheader. Beebe also posted a pair of hits while batting in a run in the contest.
Jackson Tucker totaled three RBIs, all coming off a three-run double, with a score. Cowan registered two hits, including a double, alongside a tally.
UConn put itself on the board in the top of the first inning. After a Huskey reached on a fielder's choice and moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Daniels scored him on an RBI double. Daniels was then plated on an RBI single, giving UConn an early 2-0 edge.
The Red Storm posted its first run of the game in the bottom of the second frame. With two outs, Luke Orbon sparked the rally by smacking a base hit up the middle, before Jace Jeremiah worked a five-pitch walk. LeGrande proceeded to single through the right side, scoring Orbon to cut the away lead in half, 2-1.
In the top of the third, the Huskies tacked on five runs. Daniels opened the frame with a solo home run, ahead of a Huskey reaching from a base hit and moving over to second on UConn's third sacrifice bunt of the day. Another four scored on an RBI single and a three-run double, pushing UConn's lead to six, 7-1.
The Johnnies exploded for six scores in the home side of the fourth stanza to tie the game. The Red Storm loaded the bases from a Cowan double and walks from Orbon and Jeremiah, as LeGrande earned a free pass to plate Cowan. Tucker then crushed an 0-1 pitch into left field for a bases-clearing three-run double, in front of Jayder Raifstanger working a seven-pitch walk. Beebe followed it up by knocking an RBI single of his own up the middle, scoring Tucker while an RBI fielder's choice brought Raifstanger home, knotting things up, 7-7.
UConn jumped back in front in the top of the fifth, benefiting from a Sam Biller home run to lead by one, 8-7. In the bottom of the frame, the Red Storm tied the contest again. Following Jeremiah doubling into right field, he was sent home on LeGrande's second hit of the game, evening the contest, 8-8.
The Huskies went back on top in the opening half of the sixth inning. Tyler Minick hit a solo homer, while two Huskies reached on singles. A two-run base hit capped off the scoring for the opposition, as they went ahead by three, 11-8.
Following scoreless seventh and eighth frames, UConn tallied two insurance scores in the top of the ninth. Two runs came across to score on an RBI single and RBI double, pushing the away advantage to 13-8.
The Johnnies couldn't generate any runs in the bottom of the ninth, as the Huskies held on to grab a 13-8 victory in game one.
Game 2: St. John's 6, UConn 17
LeGrande paced the Johnnies with three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. McMillan picked up two hits, consisting of a double and a home run, alongside two RBIs and a run scored. Sean Britt tallied a pair of hits, a double, an RBI and a score at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
UConn struck first in game two of Friday's doubleheader. In the top of the opening frame, the Huskies scored three runs from an RBI fielder's choice, a sacrifice fly and an RBI double to hold an initial 3-0 edge.
The Huskies added another three runs in the away half of the second inning. An RBI single scored a runner, while a two-run shot from Minick added another two tallies, pushing the away advantage to 6-0.
After a scoreless third inning, UConn tacked on two scores in the fourth. Two runners reached base on a single and a walk, before moving over on a double steal. A sacrifice fly and an RBI double scored both Huskies, as they extended their lead to 8-0.
The Johnnies found themselves on the scoreboard with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth stanza. McMillan crushed a double to the left field wall, ahead of Britt sending him home after lasering an RBI two-bagger. Orbon and Jeremiah were then issued free passes, loading the bases for LeGrande who blasted a three-run triple into right field, cutting the Red Storm's deficit to four, 8-4.
In the top of the sixth, UConn tacked on four tallies. Following back-to-back base knocks, Daniels hit an RBI single to left field, scoring one. Two outs later, an RBI double and a two-run one-bagger brought another three runs in. In the seventh, another Huskey was plated on a wild pitch, extending the away lead, 13-4.
The Johnnies registered a two-spot in the home side of the seventh frame. Raifstanger worked a walk, ahead of McMillan crushing a 2-0 pitch to left field for a two-run homer that cut UConn's advantage to 13-6.
The Huskies notched four insurance runs across the eighth and ninth innings, all off three RBI doubles and an error to stay in front, 17-6. UConn kept the Red Storm at bay through the bottom of the ninth, securing the win.
The Red Storm will polish off its series with UConn on Sunday at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. from Queens, N.Y.
