Shaun McMillan and Jon LeGrande both registered four hits in the contest
McMillan had a monster night, going 4-for-6 with a double and a homer, a career-best five RBIs and four runs scored. The freshman's five RBIs mark the second time this season that a Johnny has registered a quintuple. On the year, the Red Storm's designated hitter is slashing .338/.414/.590 with seven home runs and a team-leading 38 RBIs.
LeGrande also tallied four hits and four runs scored, alongside two home runs, a double, two RBIs and a stolen base. The junior's pair of long balls mark the first time a Johnnie has done so since now-assistant coach Garrett Scavelli did it against UConn on April 13, 2024.
Adam Agresti put together a two-hit day, totaling a two-run homer and a double with three RBIs and three walks. Jackson Tucker posted a pair of hits and a walk with two tallies in the contest. With his duo of scores, the senior outfielder has tied Doug Latrenta for third all-time on the program's career runs list, registering 183 in his career.
Jayder Raifstanger mashed a double alongside a trio of runs at Capitol One Park. Will Cowan posted a hit, three walks and a score against the Hoyas.
On the mound, Evan Chaffee put together a solid outing, only allowing four runs while tying his career-high of eight punchouts across seven complete innings of work,
The Johnnies wasted no time taking the lead of the first inning. Raifstanger sparked the rally by doubling into left-center field before moving over to third on a groundout. McMillan then sent a shot up the middle, scoring Raifstanger. Three straight walks from Cowan, Agresti and Luke Orbon scored another run, giving the Red Storm an initial 2-0 edge.
The Red Storm extended its lead with a four-spot in the away side of the second frame. LeGrande led off the inning by smacking a double down the right-field line and advancing to third on a Tucker bunt single. A Hoya error plated LeGrande and moved Tucker to third, in front of a Jared Beebe sacrifice fly that brought Tucker in to score. McMillan proceeded to hit a single into left field, followed by free passes being issued to Cowan and Agresti, loading the bases and bringing another member of the Red Storm home. Georgetown's second miscue of the inning sent McMillan to the plate, increasing St. John's advantage to 6-0.
In the third stanza, the Johnnies continued to pad their lead. LeGrande crushed a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall for a lead-off homer, pushing the Red Storm's advantage to 7-0.
In the bottom of the third, the Hoyas put themselves on the board, posting four runs on two home runs and an RBI groundout to trail by three, 7-4.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, St. Johns loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth off a LeGrande single with Tucker and Raifstanger walks. McMillan then lasered a two-run double into left field, scoring LeGrande and Tucker, ahead of Agresti walking to juice the bases. Georgetown's fourth error of the game sent McMillan and Raifstanger home, putting the Johnnies back up by seven, 11-4.
The Red Storm continued its scoring onslaught in the top side of the sixth. LeGrande blasted his second lead-off home run of the game, sending the solo shot to right-center field. Two outs later, Beebe was plunked, putting a runner on first for McMillan who demolished a ball 430 feet into left field for a two-run homer. Cowan kept the inning going by whacking a single through the left side, while Agresti capped the scoring off by lacing an RBI double down the left field line for an 11-run advantage, 15-4.
Chaffee continued to deal into the seventh inning, only allowing the Hoyas to score runs in one of his seven innings of work.
Georgetown tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Following a runner reaching on a single and advancing to second on a wild pitch, he was rounded home on an RBI base hit, cutting the Johnnies' lead to 10, 15-5.
St. John's added another tally in the top of the ninth stanza, after Agresti jacked a ball 400 feet to left center to extend the lead, 16-5. Conor Burns went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame, cementing the series-opening win for the Red Storm.
Due to forecasted inclement weather on Sunday, the Red Storm will finish its series against the Hoyas tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader. First pitch from game one is slated for 11 a.m., with game two tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.
