St. John’s to Welcome Providence on Wednesday Night

Red Storm will host conference home opener at 7 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team (2-4-2, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) will host its BIG EAST home opener on Wednesday night when it welcomes Providence (3-2-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium at 7 p.m.
Wednesday's match will be streamed on ESPN+ with Cam Manna and Jack Barteck on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com and admission is free for all fans. The first 250 students will receive a St. John's branded tie-dye t-shirt courtesy of RedZone.
The Red Storm return home after opening conference play with a 2-0 setback at UConn on Saturday night. The Red Storm held the line for the first 40 minute behind multiple impressive stops from Kayla Bower, including a saved penalty kick in the 38th minute. In the final five minutes of the half, the Huskies tacked on a pair of goals and held on in the latter stanza for a victory at Morrone Stadium.
Bower ranks first in the BIG EAST averaging 4.5 saves per contest. The senior captain has logged four or more stops in seven out of her eight appearances this season, including a career-high six saves against Monmouth. Bower was tabbed the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 1 and made a weekly honor roll appearance on Aug. 25.
Madison Mariani leads the Johnnies with 12 shot attempts, including 11 on target (91.7%). The sophomore has tallied a team-high two goals and an assist (5 points) through eight games. The underclassmen have contributed heavily on the attacking end with 13 of the St. John's 14 points this season coming from freshmen and sophomores.
The Johnnies have had success on their home pitch over the years logging a 127-49-33 record at Belson Stadium since the stadium opened in September 2002. Head Coach Ian Stone's group is 1-1-2 at home this season and scored four goals in Queens.
Wednesday marks the 40th meeting between the two programs with series knotted at 18-18-3. The Johnnies are 2-0-2 over the last four meetings played in Queens.
Providence will begin BIG EAST play on Wednesday with a 3-2-1 record on the year. The Friars won three of their first four matches to start the year and most recently fell in an inter-city battle to Brown, 4-0, on Sept. 17.
The Friars are led by Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Ella McBride, who was named the conference's defensive player of the week on Aug. 25. Five different players have recorded a goal for Providence this season.
