St. John’s Welcomes Local Foe Columbia on Thursday Night

Red Storm will carry a two-game winning streak into the home match
QUEENS, N.Y.– A Big Apple Derby is on tap for Thursday night as the St. John's (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) women's soccer team carries a two-match winning streak into a contest with local foe Columbia (0-4, 0-0 Ivy League).
The Red Storm will return to Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium for a 7 p.m. kick-off against the Lions. Thursday's contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jack Barteck and Ralph Bednarcsyk on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The first 500 fans will receive a St. John's branded Hawaiian-themed bucket hat courtesy of Coca-Cola. Additionally, all attendees will receive a free Mister Softee ice cream during Thursday's contest.
The Johnnies are coming off a 2-1 victory over Youngstown State in their home opener on Sunday afternoon. St. John's tallied a pair of goals in the opening 15:05 of the matchup and fended off the Penguins comeback attempt for its sixth consecutive win in a home opener.
Madison Mariani logged her second goal in as many games just 1:24 in the contest as the sophomore leads the Red Storm in points (4). Leana Ruiz doubled the advantage in the 16th minute off an assist from Mia Agresti. Ruiz, after her first collegiate start was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
Kayla Bower registered another strong outing between the pipes matching her career-high of five saves for the second-straight contest. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native is averaging 4.7 saves per game and carries a 0.67 GAA, both marks lead the BIG EAST. The senior was tabbed the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for the second time in her career earlier this week.
St. John's and Columbia are set to meet for the 16th time in program history leading the all-time series, 9-2-4. Prior to draws in 2021 and 2022, the Red Storm secured the last decisive victory in a 1-0 triumph at Belson Stadium on Sept. 9, 2012. The last nine meeting between the two programs have been decided by one goal or less.
Columbia is returning to New York City after a two-match road swing in California, the Lions hold an 0-4 record and are still searching for the first victory of the 2025 campaign. Columbia returns 20 players from last year's team while adding 13 freshmen.
Following Thursday's match, the Red Storm will briefly return to the road to take on Monmouth on Sunday at 1 p.m. from West Long Branch, N.J.
