St. John’s Comeback Falls Short against Delaware, 12-11

Red Storm defense allowed just four goals in the second half
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team comeback fell short dropping a heartbreaker to Delaware, 12-11, at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on Valentine's Day.
The Blue Hens (1-2) led by five goals in the opening quarter before the Red Storm erased its deficit to tie the game in the third quarter and ultimately fell by a single-goal. The Johnnies outscored the visitors, 9-4, over the final three quarters.
Ryan Ormond led the way for St. John's, recording a team-high three goals and two assists for five points. Chase Huggard added two goals and two assists on five shots, while fellow freshman Brody Hergott netted his first collegiate goal and dished out an assist. Captain Adrian Nowak extended his goal-scoring streak to seven games and his point streak to 17 games.
Matt Nelson was outstanding in goal for the Red Storm, tallying a season-high 16 saves on 48 shots faced.
The Blue Hens and Red Storm traded early possessions before Mitch Campbell opened the scoring at the 11:58 mark, rifling home a feed from Cam Konradi. Delaware responded with two consecutive goals to take the lead with 9:57 remaining in the first quarter. Owen Rogers answered two minutes later, netting his first collegiate goal to even the score. Jake Wright then gave the Red Storm a brief advantage, finishing a beautiful feed from Huggard. Delaware closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take control heading into the second period, 8-3.
To open the second quarter, the Red Storm were presented with two consecutive man-up opportunities but were unable to convert. Similar to the opening frame, both teams traded possessions without a score until Ormond jumpstarted the quarter, burying his second goal of the season. Noah Plenn followed with his fifth tally of the year, cutting the Blue Hens' advantage to three at the 8:51 mark. Nelson kept the Johnnies within striking distance, making five key saves in the stanza and holding Delaware scoreless in the second quarter. The Red Storm held an opponent scoreless in a quarter for the first time since March 23, 2024, against Le Moyne. St. John's entered halftime trailing, 8-6.
As the second half got underway, Ormond struck at the 12:42 mark, finishing a feed from Plenn to cut the Blue Hens' lead to one. Delaware answered to push the advantage back to two before Huggard converted on a well-placed pass from Ormond, netting his first goal in a Red Storm uniform to make it a one-goal game once again, 9-8.
Nelson continued his strong play in net, recording several key stops over the next eight minutes to keep St. John's within striking distance. Huggard then tied the contest at nine with his second goal of the day at the 4:15 mark, finishing a feed from Hergott. Delaware responded just 39 seconds later to regain the lead, but Ormond found the equalizer before the end of the quarter, sending the teams into the fourth frame knotted, 10-10.
Neither side found the back of the net through the first four minutes of play to start the final stanza. Delaware then struck twice in a 38-second span to build a two-goal advantage with 10:18 remaining. Facing a two-goal deficit, Nelson kept the Johnnies within reach, making three consecutive saves to halt the Blue Hens' momentum.
The teams remained scoreless over the next eight minutes until Delaware was assessed a penalty at the 4:42 mark. Nowak capitalized on the man-up opportunity, converting to cut the deficit to one. Nelson delivered another key stop with 1:28 remaining to give the Red Storm a chance to equalize, but St. John's was unable to convert on its final offensive opportunities hitting the post with eight seconds to go, falling to the Blue Hens, 12-11.
The Red Storm are back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Hamden, Conn. to take on Quinnipiac at the Quinnipiac Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium. Face-off is set for 2 p.m.
