Jayder Raifstanger sets career-high with four hits
Facing a five-run deficit after the second inning, the Johnnies (9-12) stormed back to overtake the Mavericks (7-14) in the sixth inning. UTA wouldn't go down quietly, responding with a pair of runs in the seventh.
The Red Storm notched a season-high in hits for the second straight game, totaling 17. Jayder Raifstanger led the way for St. John's with four hits. Jack Tate and Rob Mansour each recorded three hits. Shaun McMillan, Ayden Frey and Lewis Rodriguez all registered two hits. Seven Johnnies knocked in a run, with Jon LeGrande, Raifstanger and McMillan all plating a pair. LeGrande swiped a pair of bases in the outting.
After Evan Chaffee was pulled in the third inning, the St. John's bullpen provided a boost to help keep the Mavericks at bay. Both Jack Nestler and Dylan Johnson worked out of bases-loaded jams upon entering. Evan Hoeckele secured the win with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief.
UTA came out hot and scored five runs in the first two frames.
The Red Storm responded in the top of the third inning. With Mansour and Rodriguez reaching on singles, Raifstanger scored a run on a two-out single. McMillan lifted a routine fly ball to right field, but the fielder lost the ball in the sun and allowed McMillan to reach safely and knock in both runs to make it 5-3.
St. John's then scored six unanswered runs to take the lead across the middle innings. In the top of the fifth frame, with Raifstanger and McMillan on second and third with one out, Adam
Agresti grounded out to the shortstop to score Raifstanger. Tate followed up with an RBI single to knot the contest at 5-5.
In the next inning, Raifstanger brought Mansour home from second with a single. The Red Storm then broke the game open in the top of the seventh. With the bases loaded, Rodriguez scored Tate with an RBI single. LeGrande then singled to bring home Mansour and Dylan Fitzsimmons.
The Johnnies added two more runs across the eighth and ninth innings to secure the series win.
St. John's aims for its second series sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Clay Gould Ballpark is set for 2 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. CT.
