St. John’s Drops Contest to Bryant, 11-7

The Red Storm are back in action on Tuesday, hosting No. 15/16 Rutgers
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's lacrosse team (2–4, 0–0 BIG EAST) fell to Bryant (2–3, 0–0 America East), 11–7, on Saturday afternoon at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm mounted a second half push after falling behind 8–2 at halftime, but the comeback effort came up short. The Red Storm cut the deficit to two on multiple occasions with a dominant third quarter but the Bulldogs held (2-3, 0-0 America East) for the victory.
Mitch Campbell led the Johnnies with a career-high three goals on four shots on target. Owen Rogers added a season-high two goals, while Brody Hergott dished out a pair of assists. Jake Wright also found the back of the net, and Jason Pagano recorded the first goal of his collegiate career.
In goal, Matt Nelson made 11 saves for the Red Storm. The senior netminder has reached double-digit stops five times this season.
To open the game, the Red Storm took a costly penalty just 16 seconds in, but the man-down unit came up with a strong kill. Nelson then turned away a dangerous Bulldogs opportunity at the 13:04 mark. Both teams traded empty possessions before the Bulldogs ran out to a 3-0 advantage. Rogers put the Johnnies on the board at the 6:33 mark, beating the goalie with a bouncing shot for an unassisted tally. Both defenses held firm the rest of the period, sending the game into the second quarter with the Red Storm trailing, 3–1.
The second quarter opened with four scoreless minutes before St. John's was assessed a costly penalty. The Bulldogs capitalized on the man-up opportunity, converting at the 11:21 mark to extend their lead to three. Just over a minute later, Bryant struck again to take a four-goal advantage, prompting a Red Storm timeout.
Following a key defensive turnover, Pagano netted the first goal of his collegiate career with 8:53 remaining, trimming the deficit to 5–2. The Bulldogs answered two minutes later to push their lead back to four. After a five-minute scoring drought, Matt Nelson kept the Johnnies within reach with a pair of impressive back-to-back saves. Bryant closed the half with two goals, sending the game into the break with St. John's trailing, 8–2.
