QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's cross country team finished first at the annual St. John's Fall Festival, held at Cunningham Park in Queens, N.Y. The Red Storm sported four of the top six finishers in the women's 4K race, and edged out local rivals Fordham and Hofstra.
St. John's finished with a team score of 26, while Fordham registered 35 points and Hofstra tallied 75 points. On the men's side, Fordham placed first in the 6K race with an average time of 19:38.
The Red Storm was paced by junior Samantha Meyerhoff, who placed third overall and first on the team with a time of 14:25.52. She was closely followed by classmate Nicole Cocozza who crossed the line in 14:29.59. Meyerhoff's time marked her fastest 4K effort in her young Red Storm career, while Cocozza recorded a new career-best performance.
The next trio of St. John's runners finished just ten seconds later as junior Aryon Trujillo, senior Sarah Sudbury and freshman Chelsea Trant rounded out the Red Storm scoring five. Trujillo ran her best 4K race since her freshman year, clocking in at 14:40.05. Sudbury also boasted a stellar effort by improving on last year's Fall Festival performance by over a minute, finishing in 14:43.38. Trant recorded a solid performance for the second straight week by scoring points for St. John's with a time of 14:48.43.
"I was very pleased with our overall effort today," head coach Jim Hurt said. "We ran more and more like we want to, in terms of running as a tight group. We've been training all season to put five people right in that short split. Today shows that it is starting to happen."
Freshman Angela Jarvela placed 24th overall with a time of 15:37.00. Senior Kim Piard clocked in at 16:07.39, while classmate Katrina Schaefer finished in 16:44.88.
As a team, St. John's posted an average finish time of 14:37.40.
While serving as a home meet for the St. John's cross country team, the Fall Festival also includes a mile-long fun run that raises money for breast cancer research.
"We had a beautiful day here for our event in Cunningham Park," Hurt said. "We appreciate everybody coming out and supporting the breast cancer fun run."
St. John's will be back in action on Oct. 30, when the team travels to Syracuse, N.Y., for the BIG EAST Championships.
