Jonathan Huber’s seven points propels the Red Storm past the Hawks
QUEENS, N.Y. – Led by a career-high seven-point performance from redshirt freshman Jonathan Huber, the St. John's lacrosse team earned its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Hartford on the road, 18-10.
"It's always great to get a win, but the real positive is that we continue to grow," said Head Coach Jason Miller. "We broke out of the gates really fast today but I have to give Hartford a lot of credit for making its own run in the second quarter."
For the Red Storm, the win over the Hawks marked its first road victory since the Johnnies overcame Saint Joseph's last season on March 6, 12-7, in Philadelphia.
Huber paced the way offensively for St. John's (1-1), as the attackman ended the day with a combined seven points on five goals and two assists. The Great River, N.Y., native led the Johnnies with 12 total shots.
Four other members of the Red Storm tallied multi-goal games, as Colin Duffy netted four goals, while Joe Madsen, and Mike Madsen each registered hat tricks on the day.
In total, six Johnnies tallied points in the contest, including senior midfielder Michael Hatzopoulos, who scored his first goal of the season in the third period. This marked the Syosset, N.Y., native's first goal since Apr. 29, 2017 against Georgetown, during his sophomore season.
Freshman netminder, Brody Agres, earned his first collegiate win, recording eleven saves in 60 minutes of action.
Joseph Fitzpatrick and Colin Bosak split duties at the faceoff, as St. John's topped Rutgers at the X, 19-30. Fitzpatrick won 10 of his 17 faceoff attempts, while Bosak, finished 9-for-13.
Coach Miller couldn't have asked a better start, exploding on a 7-0 scoring run through the first ten minutes of the game. Duffy kicked off scoring with a goal just 30 seconds into the game. Declan Swartwood and the Madsen brothers each tallied two goals in the first period.
After allowing St. John's to score seven unanswered goals, the Hawks responded with six goals of their own, five of them coming from senior attackman Dylan Jinks. The Johnnies closed off the first half with two goals to take a 9-6 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the intermission, the Johnnies picked up right where they left off, scoring the first four goals of the third period. Duffy and Huber each netted two unassisted goals in the period.
The Red Storm entered the fourth quarter with a 15-8 lead. The Johnnies would score three more goals in the final fifteen minutes of play behind two goals from Huber and the other from Duffy.
Jinks finished the game with eight goals for Hartford, to tie a program record.
"We settled down late in the second quarter and found a way out of another game of runs," Miller said. "Overall, we improved from last week."
St. John's returns to action next Saturday as the Johnnies travel to High Point, N.C., on Feb. 23, to take on High Point at 12 p.m.
