St. John’s looks to win its second-consecutive game to improve to 2-1 this season.
QUEENS, N.Y. – After picking up its first win of the season at Hartford last weekend, the St. John's lacrosse team will hit the road for the second-straight weekend to battle with High Point on Saturday at noon.
The contest will mark just the third all-time meeting between the two programs, and the Red Storm's second trip to High Point, N.C. Last season, Joe Madsen and Jason DeBenedictis led the way with five points apiece, guiding the Red Storm to a 16-11 victory over the Panthers at DaSilva Memorial Field. In the first ever meeting between the two programs in 2017, High Point picked up a 15-6 win over St. John's in The Tar Heel State.
Saturday's game will be available to stream live on ESPN+. ESPN+ is a streaming service that requires a $4.99 per month or $49.99 annual fee. There is a free, 7-day trial for those who have not previously used ESPN +.
Two days after posting a dominant 18-10 victory at Hartford, St. John's received three votes in Monday's USILA Coaches Poll. The weekend before, St. John's saw a late lead slip away against nationally ranked Rutgers in the team's season opener.
Against the Hawks, Jonathan Huber led the Johnnies with a career-high seven-points on five goals and two assists. The Great River, N.Y., native was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for his efforts.
Four other members of the Red Storm tallied multi-goal games in Hartford, as Colin Duffy netted four goals, while Joe Madsen, and Mike Madsen each registered hat tricks on the day.
In total, six Johnnies tallied points in the contest, including senior midfielder Michael Hatzopoulos, who scored his first goal of the season in the third quarter. This marked the Syosset, N.Y., native's first goal since Apr. 29, 2017 against Georgetown, during his sophomore season.
Freshman netminder Brody Agres earned his first collegiate win, recording 11 saves in 60 minutes of action.
Joseph Fitzpatrick and Colin Bosak split duties at the faceoff, as St. John's topped Rutgers at the X, 19-11. Fitzpatrick won 10 of his 17 faceoff attempts while Bosak finished 9-for-13.
Saturday's showdown will mark the fifth game of the season for the Panthers and their second at home. High Point has recorded a pair of signature top 10 victories so far in 2019. On Feb. 6, the Panthers defeated No. 2 Duke, 13-9, in Durham before outlasting No. 9 Virginia, 14-13, 11 days later in Charlottesville. The Panthers also posted a 13-0 shutout win over St. Bonaventure to commence their 2019 season.
High Point is led by sophomore attackman Asher Nolting, who has tallied 21 points (11 goals, 10 assists) through four games this season, the most through that stretch in program history.
Jon Torpey has led the High Point men's lacrosse program since its inception, having been named the program's first head coach in 2010. Last season, the Panthers finished with a 4-10 mark and 2-5 record in Southern Conference play.
The Red Storm will return to DaSilva Memorial Field next weekend to host Michigan on Saturday. Face-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. on ESPN3.
