St. John’s looks to win its first conference game since the 2016 season
QUEENS, N.Y. – After winning its second-straight game at home on Saturday, March 23, over UMass Lowell, 15-13, the St. John's lacrosse team returns to action at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday to host the Providence Friars in its first BIG EAST showdown of the season.
Coverage of Saturday's game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 with Cary Gluck on the call from Queens.
The contest will mark the third of four consecutive home games for the Johnnies, as the Red Storm look to win its third contest in a row and claim its first conference victory since April 30, 2016.
The St. John's lacrosse team earned its second home win of the season in dramatic fashion, overcoming a five-goal deficit for the first time in program history to defeat the UMass Lowell River Hawks, 15-13.
Declan Swartwood paced the way offensively for St. John's against the River Hawks, as the midfielder ended the day with five goals and two assists. The senior from Bernardsville, N.J., eclipsed his career-high four goals that he set five days ago against Dartmouth. Swartwood's stellar week earned him his first BIG EAST Weekly Honor recognition of his collegiate career.
After finishing with a career-high seven points in Tuesday's win, Mike Madsen netted four goals and dished out two assists on Saturday. Joe Madsen and Colin Duffy each scored two goals and Jonathan Huber added a goal in the winning effort over UMass Lowell.
In total, seven Johnnies tallied points in the contest last weekend, including senior midfielder Luke Roediger, who recorded an assist on the first Red Storm goal of the game.
The Johnnies narrowly won the faceoff battle against the River Hawks, winning 16 of its 30 attempts. Colin Bosak accounted for all but one of the team's 16 faceoff wins.
Saturday's showdown will mark the 10th game of the season for the Friars, and their seventh game on the road. Providence heads into Saturday's contest having won two of its last three contests, both against opponents on St. John's schedule this season. On March, 16, the Friars traveled to Hempstead, N.Y., to take on Hofstra and steal the game in the closing minutes, 11-10. Three days later, Providence ventured to UMass Lowell and crushed the River Hawks, 14-4. Three of the Friars' losses have been decided by a single goal.
Providence is led in scoring by senior attackman Nick Hatzipetrakos with 27 goals and two assists while Brendan Kearns has 17 goals and nine assists. Freshman attackman Matt Grillo has 15 goals and eight assists while Ryan Nawrocki and Tim Hinrichs each have 17 points. Senior goalkeeper Tate Boyce has a 9.55 goals against average with 110 saves and a .570 save percentage.
Chris Gabrielli is currently in his fifth season as head coach of the Providence men's lacrosse program. Gabrielli came to Providence College after spending the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at Duke University, where he worked primarily with the Blue Devils' defensive unit. He also served as the program's recruiting coordinator, under the direction of current Duke Head Coach John Danowski.
Last season, Gabrielli led the Friars to a 5-10 record, including a 1-4 conference mark.
Saturday's showdown will mark the 19th meeting between St. John's and Providence. The Red Storm holds a 15-3 lead in the series history. In the last contest between the two programs, the Friars ran away with the victory, defeating the Johnnies in Rhode Island, 14-8.
The last time St. John's defeated Providence was on March 28, 2015, as the Red Storm utilized a 10-1 scoring run to defeat the Friars, 17-7, at DaSilva Memorial Field.
