Red Storm will look to top the Knights for the 27th consecutive time
The St. John's baseball team will look to remain undefeated at home against non-conference opponents when the Red Storm welcomes Fairleigh Dickinson to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a Tuesday tilt. The contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start and will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
The Johnnies (19-13, 3-3 BIG EAST) will enter their midweek matchup on the heels of their first series loss in conference play since April of 2017, snapping a streak of 12 consecutive series victories. Prior to this past weekend, the Red Storm had not lost two of three at home to a BIG EAST foe since May of 2016. Ryan Markey, Joe Kelly and Turner French are the only players on the 2019 St. John's roster that had ever suffered through a BIG EAST series loss at home before dropping two of three to Xavier. Since the conference realigned priot to the 2014 season, St. John's has never been swept by a BIG EAST opponent.
St. John's is 10-0 this season when welcoming a non-conference opponent to Jack Kaiser Stadium. Beginning with a three-game sweep of Big 12 foe Kansas in mid-March, the Johnnies are outscoring non-conference opponents by more than five runs per game (8.5 to 3.4) in Queens. Offensively over that stretch, Rudy Aguilar has led the way with a .483 batting average and 10 RBIs while Ryan Hogan (.394), Mitchell Henshaw (.394) and Mike Antico (.387) are all hitting .387 or better. As a team, the Red Storm is hitting .312 at the dish in those games while the pitching staff has turned in a .199 opponent batting average to go along with a 2.32 staff ERA.
Through his first 19 outings as a Johnnie, Brandon Bossard struggled at the dish, hitting .091 with four RBIs. Over his last six outings, four of which have been against BIG EAST foes, Bossard has completely flipped the script. The junior from Lemont, Ill., has hits in all six of those games, three of which have been multi-hit outings, and is hitting .375 while reaching base at a .483 clip. He has driven in five runs, including a pair of game-winning hits against Albany and LIU Brooklyn in midweek action last week. On Wednesday against the Blackbirds, Bossard ripped a first-pitch double off the wall in the bottom of the 11th, scoring Antico from first and sealing a come-from-behind win for the Red Storm.
While Bossard has been enjoying a turnaround at the dish, junior right hander Gavin Hollowell has been experiencing a resurgence on the mound. Entering this past week with a 2-2 record, one save and a 9.00 ERA, Hollowell registered three stellar outings in a 3-2 stretch for the Red Storm, playing a significant part in all three of those victories. On Tuesday against Albany, the Johnnies took the lead in the bottom of the eighth before Hollowell entered in the ninth and faced only three batters en route to his second save of the year. The following day, Hollowell took the mound in the top of the 11th and set the Blackbirds down with just seven pitches, picking up the win and improving to 3-2. The Skillman, N.J., native's best performance of the week came in a no-decision on Saturday against Xavier, as Hollowell entered a tie game in the top of the ninth and retired the first 13 batters he faced before allowing his lone hit of the game with one out in the 13th. The Johnnies would go on to walk off in the 14th.
FDU enters Tuesday's game with a record of 7-24-1 after sweeping Mount St. Mary's in Teaneck. The Knights averaged 13 runs per outing over the weekend, authoritatively snapping a seven-game losing streak.
The Knights will throw right hander Ryan Seburn to start the game on Tuesday. Seburn, a freshman who will make just his fourth collegiate appearance and his first start, leads the team in ERA at 1.69. As a team, FDU sports an ERA of 8.79.
Redshirt freshman Adam Frank, a former teammate of St. John's freshman Matt Semon at Don Bosco Prep, leads the team in batting average at .340. Nate Brodsky (.317), also a freshman, is the only other Knight hitting better than .300 on the season.
St. John's is 47-7-1 all-time against FDU dating back to 1960. The Red Storm has not lost to the Knights since the team has been known as the Red Storm, last dropping a decision in the series on April 15, 1987. The Johnnies have won 26 consecutive outings against FDU since that loss 32 years ago.
The Red Storm and the Knights were rained out a year ago on March 6, but the Johnnies took two games from FDU in 2017 by a combined score of 24-8.
