Belge and Hollowell shut out the Wildcats over final eight innings
One day after exploding for 24 runs in a lopsided win over Villanova, St. John's clinched the series in a lower scoring affair on Saturday afternoon, topping the Wildcats, 3-1, at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Jeff Belge allowed one run over 5.2 innings to pick up his second win of the year, striking out five in the process. Belge handed the ball off to Gavin Hollowell, who registered the long save with 3.1 frames of scoreless work. The 6-foot-7 fireballer fanned a career-high seven batters over that span.
Brandon Bossard and Mitchell Henshaw recorded solo home runs for the Johnnies (22-14, 5-4 BIG EAST) while Mike Antico added an RBI single a day after logging 14 total bases.
Villanova (10-26, 3-6 BIG EAST) scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Pat O'Neill laced a bases-loaded single to center with one out before Belge recorded consecutive outs to stop the bleeding and get out of the inning.
With one gone in the bottom of the third, Villanova starter Gordon Graceffo had throw just 21 pitches. Bossard then stepped into the box and battled the right hander for 12 pitches before launching lucky number 13 over the wall in left center and knotting the score at one.
The Johnnies took the lead on their second homer of the day, a solo shot off the bat of Henshaw to lead off the bottom of the fifth. The Red Storm quickly added another run, as Bossard walked before moving to second on a failed pickoff and scoring on an Antico single up the middle, putting St. John's ahead 3-1 heading into the sixth.
Villanova loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth, but Hollowell promptly worked an infield fly followed by two swinging strikeouts to ice the St. John's victory.
The Red Storm will return to action at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, playing host to Stony Brook at 3 p.m.
