Johnnies to host Seahawks for annual Senior Night
QUEENS, N.Y. (May 6, 2019) – The St. John's baseball team will play its non-conference finale on Tuesday evening at Jack Kaiser Stadium, welcoming Wagner to Queens for a 6 p.m. first pitch on ESPN3.
The game will serve as the team's annual Senior Night, as Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer and the St. John's Athletic Department will recognize seven student-athletes for their contributions to the program over the course of their collegiate careers. Turner French, Joe Kelly, Chris Henry, Wyatt Mascarella, Peter Abinanti, Ryan Markey and Ben Greenberg are set to be honored before the start of Tuesday night's game.
St. John's (25-19) will look to remain undefeated in home midweek games and improve to 15-1 in contests against non-conference foes in Queens. The Johnnies had been undefeated at The Jack against non-BIG EAST opponents before falling to Princeton, 3-1, in the opening tilt of Saturday's doubleheader. The Red Storm rebounded in game two for a 4-2 victory behind a three-RBI effort from Mike Antico.
The team leader in batting average at .342, Antico is coming off a solid weekend at the dish. The junior left fielder went 2-for-4 in the opening game of a Saturday doubleheader against Princeton before driving in three of the team's four runs in the second contest of the twin bill. One of Antico's RBIs in that outing came via the long ball, as the Colts Neck, N.J., native launched his fifth rounder tripper of the season off the back of the bullpen in the bottom of the third. The following inning, the speedster legged out a two-run infield single. Antico's 16 stolen bases are the most by a St. John's player since 2018, when Jeremy Baltz swiped 18 bags and Matt Wessinger, the program's all-time hits leader, stole 34.
In the team's last midweek game at Jack Kaiser Stadium, the Red Storm received a career effort from junior left hander Nick Mondak. Making just his seventh appearance as a Johnnie, Mondak fanned 10 Iona batters in six innings of scoreless, two-hit work. The Watertown, Conn., native also allowed just one runner to reach base on balls in his first collegiate victory. Prior to punching out 10 Gaels, Mondak's previous single-game career high was five, achieved during the lone appearance of his freshman year against Richmond on Feb. 19, 2017.
Mondak is far from the only Red Storm hurler to enjoy a solid outing as of late. Through games played on Sunday, the Red Storm ranks 18th nationally with a team ERA of 3.43 while Joe LaSorsa's 1.60 ERA checks in at no. 14 in the individual rankings. The Johnnies' 7.64 hits allowed per nine innings also rank 23rd in Division I.
Wagner enters the week on the heels of six-straight losses, coming off consecutive sweeps at the hands of Bryant and Central Connecticut State at home. Four of those six defeats came by two runs or fewer.
The Seahawks are hitting .265 as a team, led by senior infielder Will Johnson at .340. Classmate Anthony Pecora has proven to be the team's most effective power hitter, slugging a team-best .453 with 10 doubles, five home runs and 26 RBIs, all of which lead the squad.
St. John's and Wagner have met 68 times since 1956 with the Johnnies holding a 58-10 advantage over their neighbors from Staten Island. The Red Storm has won each of the last four matchups between the squads, including a 3-1 victory last year on March 27 at The Jack.
The Red Storm is 27-2 all-time against the Seahawks in Queens.
