Red Storm will welcome Peacocks on Tuesday, Gaels on Wednesday
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 9, 2020) – On the heels of a rough weekend at UNLV, the St. John's baseball team will return to New York for its first home games of the 2020 campaign, welcoming Saint Peter's to Jack Kaiser Stadium on Tuesday before playing host to Iona on Wednesday. First pitch for both games is scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Red Storm will make its season debut at Jack Kaiser Stadium after dropping three straight against the Runnin' Rebels in Las Vegas. In those three contests, the Red Storm, which has now lost seven in a row dating back to Feb. 23, was outscored by a total of 34-5.
St. John's carries an overall record of 3-9, identical to the record it brought into its Northeast opener last spring in New Rochelle against Iona. Over the team's next 17 games, the 2019 Red Storm ripped off 15 wins before finishing the season 31-23 and making a league record 16th consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Last spring, Mike Antico returned from the season-opening West Coast swing batting .161 after 10 appearances. He would hit .431 over his last 42 outings, finishing the season at .386, good enough for second in the BIG EAST and 22nd nationally. Four other Johnnies hit .290 or better after returning from the West Coast in 2019, as Carson Bartels hit .300, Ryan Markey hit .296, Mitchell Henshaw hit .291 and Brandon Miller hit .290 over the team's final 42 games.
Three Johnnies left the yard this past weekend in Las Vegas, as Mitchell Henshaw homered on Friday before Antico followed up with a solo shot on Saturday and David Glancy belted his first collegiate round-tripper on Sunday. The Red Storm now has seven home runs on the season, the highest total by a St. John's team through 12 games since hitting nine in the opening 12 contests of the 2018 campaign.
Bartels was the only member of the Red Storm to record hits in all three games against the Runnin' Rebels. The senior second baseman singled in the opener on Friday before doubling and scoring a run in game two. In the Sunday finale, Bartels smacked an RBI single to plate the team's second tally of the afternoon.
Three different Johnnies tallied multi-hit games over the weekend, as Peter Abinanti and Colin Wetterau logged two singles apiece on Saturday before Markey went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in the series finale on Sunday. Wetterau currently ranks third on the team in batting average at .278 on the year.
Freshman Sonny Fauci and sophomore Brian Hendry are scheduled to make their first career starts in midweek action for the Johnnies. Fauci has yet to give up an earned run in four appearances, striking out four in 6.2 innings of work.
Saint Peter's enters the midweek with an overall record of 1-14 after being swept at LIU this past weekend. The Peacocks picked up their lone win of the season last Wednesday at Rutgers, taking down the Scarlet Knights, 6-3, in Piscataway.
John Gavura, a senior from Marlton, N.J., leads the team with a .353 batting average through 15 games. Seven of his 18 hits have gone for extra bases and he has walked a team-high 10 times.
Iona, who will head to Stony Brook for a Tuesday afternoon tilt before coming to Queens, enters the week at 3-11 after coming out on the wrong end of a sweep at Fordham this past weekend. The Gaels also lost in midweek action at Fairleigh Dickinson after winning three straight against George Mason in Fairfax, Va., from Feb. 28-March 1.
The Gaels are hitting .243 as a team, led by junior outfielder Ryan Casey at .345. Senior infielder Brian Picone is also batting better than .300 on the season, checking in at .314 with a team-high .490 slugging percentage.
Saint Peter's and St. John's will meet for the 25th time on Tuesday afternoon in a series that dates back to 1956 and favors the Johnnies, 23-1. The Peacocks picked up their lone win in 2016 at Jack Kaiser Stadium. St. John's is 17-1 all-time in Queens against Saint Peter's.
Iona and St. John's will face one another for the 68th time since 1956. The Johnnies currently own a 56-11 advantage against their neighbors from New Rochelle. St. John's has won 10 straight against the Gaels dating back to 2014, including a pair of games last season in which the Red Storm outscored Iona by a combined margin of 13-2.
