Red Storm and Rams will close their four-game series tomorrow in Queens
With the split, St. John's is now 9-4 on the season while Fordham moves to 8-3.
The two teams will wrap their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN3.
Game One
Following a back-and-forth finish to force extras, the Red Storm and the Rams played five innings of bonus baseball before Fordham broke through in the bottom of the 13th for a 7-6 victory.
C.J. Vazquez drove in four of the Rams' seven runs, including the game-winning RBI fielder's choice in the 13th and a three-run double with the bases loaded to put Fordham ahead 6-5 in the sixth. Trey Maeker went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
For St. John's, Brandon Miller and Carson Bartels each recorded a two-RBI hit. Ryan Hogan was the only Johnnie to register multiple hits, going 2-for-6. Justin Folz and Vincent Bianchi also logged RBIs for the Red Storm.
On the mound, Matt Semon (4.0) and Ethan Routzahn (2.1) combined to throw 6.1 innings of scoreless relief. Ian Murphy started the contest, allowing two earned runs on four hits over 4.0 frames of work.
Maeker scored the game's first run with a solo shot to right in the bottom of the third, giving the Rams an early 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm wasted no time responding, plating three runs in the top of the fourth. David Glancy and Mitchell Henshaw led off the inning with walks before each advancing a base on a passed ball. Miller then delivered a two-RBI single up the middle before eventually coming around to score on a Bianchi RBI groundout, bumping the Red Storm lead to 3-1 after three and a half.
In the home half of the inning, Maeker recorded his second RBI of the day on a base hit before Colton Snelling brought home another run in the following at-bat, making it a 3-3 game after four.
After a scoreless fifth, Bianchi and Bartels posted back-to-back two-out doubles in the sixth, the latter of which plated two runs and gave the Red Storm a 5-3 edge.
The lead was short-lived; however, as a single and two walks loaded the bases for C.J. Vazquez, who dropped a bases-clearing double down the left-field line to put Fordham ahead 6-5 heading into the seventh.
With one gone in the top of the seventh, Henshaw singled before Nick Cirelli and Miller drew consecutive walks to load the bases for Folz, who was promptly hit by the first pitch he saw and drove in the game-tying run.
St. John's threatened in the top of the eighth, as Jake Lazzaro legged a one-out triple before a Hogan infield single to the left side gave the Red Storm runners on the corners with one out. Glancy then grounded into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play, ending the St. John's rally.
Fordham left two runners on base in the ninth and a runner on third in the 10th. The Red Storm's next best chance of extras came in the 11th, as Hogan singled to lead off the frame before stealing second, but he was left 180 feet from home.
St. John's went down in order in the 12th and 13th innings before the Rams plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the 13th.
Game Two
Colin Wetterau went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hogan delivered the game-winning hit in the sixth inning to lift St. John's past Fordham, 4-3, in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.
Brandyn Cruz picked up his first career win on the mound, retiring all six batters he faced in two frames of perfect relief. Joe Joe Rodriguez also recorded a career-first, picking up his first Division I save by striking out two in a scoreless bottom of the seventh. Nick Guzzi tossed 3.0 innings in relief of starter Sonny Fauci, allowing one hit and an unearned run.
After failing to score in the final six innings of the game one marathon, St. John's got on the board first in game two. Lazzaro singled to start the contest before coming around to score after two walks and a hit-by-pitch, giving the Red Storm an early 1-0 edge.
Fordham answered with two in the home half of the first before three walks and a run-scoring hit-by-pitch from Folz, hit second of the day, knotted the contest back at two a side.
The third and fourth innings were scoreless before each team produced a run in the fifth. Folz led off the frame with a walk before stealing second, advancing to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a Wetterau single to short. Fordham's Jason Coules responded with a similar sequence in the home half. He drew a leadoff walk before stealing second, stealing third and scoring on a passed ball to make it a 3-3 game after five.
In the top of the sixth, it was Lazzaro's turn to manufacture a run. With two outs, the Oceanside native walked, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a Hogan single through the left side.
Cruz then threw a 1-2-3 sixth before Rodriguez shut the door in the seventh, sealing the St. John's victory.
