Red Storm rebounds with 4-1 victory in game two
After dropping the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, 11-4, the St. John's baseball team responded with a 4-1 victory in the twin-bill's second contest, topping Creighton by a score of 4-1 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
Game One
Leading 2-0 after three innings, the Red Storm saw Creighton score 11 unanswered runs over the next three frames, as the Bluejays took game one, 11-4, in seven innings.
Ryan Hogan went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Vincent Bianchi logged two singles and scored a run.
Marty Higgins, Jake Lazzaro and Nick Schwartz also added hits for the Red Storm. Schwartz went yard in his lone at-bat of the game, launching a first-pitch, pinch-hit shot to left in the seventh.
Making his first career weekend start, Matt Semon cruised through the first three innings, retiring all nine batters he faced during his first trip through the Creighton lineup.
Before Semon's final perfect frame, the Red Storm jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Bianchi pushed a leadoff single through the right side before Lazzaro drew a walk, giving the Red Storm a pair of runners with one out. After both Johnnies advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch, Chris Conniff chopped a run-scoring grounder to plate the first run of the afternoon. Next up was Hogan, who singled to short and pushed the Red Storm lead to a pair.
After the Johnnies went down 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth, Creighton evened things up with two runs in the home half of the frame, as David Webel scored on a wild pitch and Parker Upton lifted a sac fly to center.
With Semon out of the game, the Bluejays opened the floodgates over the next two innings, scoring six runs on just one hit in the fifth before adding three more in the sixth.
St. John's cut into the deficit in the top of the seventh, as Schwartz belted a pinch-hit solo shot on the first pitch he saw, but his round tripper and a Hogan sac fly were not enough to keep the Johnnies going, as Creighton took game one by a score of 11-4.
Game Two
The Red Storm jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, registering a wire-to-wire 4-1 victory over the Bluejays.
After sitting out the first game of the twin-bill, Carson Bartels went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Brian Morrell singled twice and drove in a run while David Williams blasted his second home run of the season. Hogan plated the Red Storm's other run with a seventh-inning squeeze bunt while Higgins and Lazzaro singled and scored for the Johnnies.
Brian Hendry picked up his second win of the season, scattering seven hits and one run in 5.2 innings of work while fanning eight and issuing only one free pass.
Joe Joe Rodriguez entered in relief of Hendry with two outs in the sixth and proceeded to allow just one hit and strike out four in 2.1 frames of scoreless work. Ethan Routzahn recorded a 1-2-3 ninth inning to notch his fifth save of the year.
St. John's wasted no time getting on the board, as Bartels laced a leadoff double in the first before coming around to score on a Morrell RBI single two batters later.
After both teams left runners on the corners in the third, the Red Storm appeared poised to strike again in the top of the fourth. Bianchi led off the frame with an infield single to short before advancing two bases on wild pitches, putting a runner on third with nobody out. The next three St. John's batters, however, went down in order to strand Bianchi 90 feet from home.
Williams added on to the St. John's lead in the sixth, launching a solo shot to left center and making it a 2-0 game in favor of the Red Storm.
Creighton used a pair of hits to cut the Red Storm advantage in half in the bottom of the sixth before the Johnnies built it back in the top of the seventh. With runners on first and second and one out, Bartels ripped a first-pitch single through the left side to score Higgins and make it a two-run game. The Johnnies were not done, as Hogan dropped a squeeze bunt to score Lazzaro and give the Red Storm its largest lead of the contest, 4-1, at the stretch.
After allowing the first two batters of the seventh to reach base, Rodriguez retired the next six he faced with four of those outs coming via the K.
Routzahn surrendered a leadoff walk in the ninth before forcing a double play ball and ringing up Webel to end the game.
The Red Storm will look to even the series with Creighton tomorrow afternoon in Omaha. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
