St. John’s Welcomes in Hofstra and Wagner for Midweek Action

Red Storm will make up game with the Pride on Tuesday before facing the Seahawks on Wednesday
QUEENS, N.Y.- After sweeping Sacred Heart this past weekend, the St. John's baseball team will look to keep things rolling against Hofstra and Wagner. Both games on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, are set to start at 3 p.m.
Both matchups will be live streamed on ESPN3 and live stats for both midweek tilts will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Kevin Michaels hit for the cycle against Sacred Heart on Sunday, the first by a Johnnie since Ryan Mahoney against LIU on April 17, 2007 and was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday. The Encinitas, Calif., native batted .857 (12-for-14) over the weekend with three home runs, a triple, three doubles and 13 RBIs. The redshirt sophomore currently leads the team in batting average (.414), slugging percentage (.690) and RBIs (16). Michaels is also tied for the team lead in round trippers with three.
Tate Ballestero also enjoyed a stellar weekend at the plate, including his first home run in a St. John's uniform on Sunday against the Pioneers. The Morristown, N.J., native hit .533 in his three starts (8-for-15) and tallied at least two base hits during each of the three contests to extend his on-base streak to eight games. The Virginia transfer is one of two Johnnies to start every game this season and sits at second on the team with .388 batting average.
The other member of the Red Storm to start every game this season, David Glancy hit home runs in back-to-back games against Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday, respectively, and is currently hitting at a .343 clip. Glancy is tied with Michaels for the team lead in homers (3) and owns the longest active hitting streak on the roster, recording a base hit in eight straight games.
Freshmen Luke Orbon and Jackson Tucker round out the Johnnies with batting averages of .300 or beter. Orbon is currently hitting .321 in 16 games with two homers, three doubles and eight RBIs while Tucker is batting .300 in 15 games with a home run, three doubles and seven RBIs and also holds the longest active on-base streak on the squad at 13 games.
Brandon Backman will make his second start of the season on Tuesday against Hofstra. Sonny Fauci will make his season debut against Wagner on Wednesday. Last time out against LIU, Backman threw 3.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in a no-decision.
Ben Adams, Joe Mascio and Jude Zern each picked up their first win of the season. In Friday's opener, Adams tossed 3.2 innings, allowing only one run and striking out one while Mascio threw 1.0 scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win on Saturday. In Sunday's finale, Zern allowed one run on four hits over 1.1 relief innings to give the Johnnies their first series sweep of the season.
Hofstra enters Tuesday's matchup with a record of 8-6 while Wagner will travel to Queens with a 2-15 record.
Hofstra is batting .252 as a team, and Wagner is hitting .199 collectively. The Pride boast a 3.99 team ERA while the Seahawks have an 11.15 ERA.
Hofstra's top hitter is former Johnnie Brian Morrell, entering Tuesday's game with a .429 batting average with a homer, a triple, five doubles and 12 RBIs. Dante Faicchio leads the Seahawks at the plate, batting .292 with a team-high 14 RBIs.
St. John's leads the all-time series with Hofstra, 62-11, and with Wagner, 59-10.
The Johnnies have won the last five meetings against the Pride dating back to 2017, and the last five games over the Seahawks since 2014. This will mark the first time the Red Storm has played both teams since 2019.
