Glancy Belts Three Homers, Johnnies Take Down Hofstra, 9-7

Red Storm scores four in the bottom of the eighth to win its fourth straight
Glancy went 3-for-3 with three home runs, two walks and four RBIs. He became just the second Johnnie in the last decade to leave the yard three times, joining Mike Antico, who hit three home runs and a double in a 24-6 win over Villanova on April 19, 2019. Before Antico, the last Johnnie to belt three or more home runs in a game was Jeremy Baltz, who blasted four round trippers at Louisville on May 14, 2010, on his way to National Freshman of the Year honors.
Glancy's final RBI came during a four-run eighth inning that saw the Johnnies flip a two-run deficit into a two-run advantage. The Johnnies plated four runs in the frame despite not recording a hit, drawing six walks and scoring another run on a passed ball.
Tate Ballestero went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored while Kevin Michaels went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Michaels and Ballestero are now hitting .419 and .394, respectively, on the season.
Jermaine White and Nick Cirelli also tallied base knocks for the Red Storm (6-14).
Brandon Backman started his second contest of the season, giving up one run and three hits over 4.0 innings of work. The graduate student struck out three Hofstra batters and threw 31 of his 53 pitches for strikes.
Oliver McCarthy picked up his first win as a Johnnie before Chuck Sanzio tallied his team-leading third save of the season.
After Backman set Hofstra down 1-2-3 in the first, Glancy put the Johnnies on the board with a one-out solo blast, his fourth of the season, in the home half of the frame.
Two innings later, Glancy left the yard again, dropping a first-pitch fastball over the wall in left to make it a 2-0 game in favor of the Johnnies. The Red Storm added on one more run in the frame, as Ballestero doubled before stealing third and scoring on a Michaels single to left.
Hofstra responded with a run in the top of the fourth, as former Johnnie Brian Morrell laced off a lead-off double before scoring on an Anthony D'Onofrio single two batters later.
St. John's tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a passed ball with Ballestero on third, making it a 4-1 game in favor of the home side.
Hofstra answered in the top of the sixth with four runs to take its first lead of the afternoon, 5-4. Pinch-hitter Steve Harrington and shortstop Ryan Morash tallied a pair of two-RBI hits in the frame.
The Pride pushed its lead to a pair, 6-4, with a run-scoring double play in the seventh before Glancy's third round tripper of the day cut the deficit back to one, 6-5, in the first at-bat of the home half.
Hofstra made it three straight innings with a run in the top of the eighth, as Harrington picked up his third RBI of the day on a one-out fielder's choice to score D'Onofrio and make it 7-5 in favor of the Pride.
The Red Storm retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth, hanging up four runs despite not recording a hit in the inning. Six Johnnies drew a walk in the frame, including five straight with two outs to push across three runs. The Red Storm scored its final tally of the frame on a two-out passed ball.
Hofstra threatened in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out before Sanzio worked out of the jam to pick up his second save in the team's last three games.
St. John's will return to action tomorrow afternoon at The Jack, welcoming Wagner for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
