St. John’s to Host Georgetown for Final Home Series of 2022

Red Storm and Hoyas set for three pivotal games at Jack Kaiser Stadium
QUEENS, N.Y.- After sweeping the season series with Iona on Wednesday, the St. John's baseball team will wrap up its home portion of the schedule when it hosts BIG EAST foe Georgetown for a three-game conference series. First pitch on Friday is set for 6 p.m. Saturday is Ed Blankmeyer Day; the legendary coach will return to Jack Kaiser Stadium and throw out the first pitch. Six seniors will also be honored for their contributions to the program before a 3 p.m. start. Sunday's series finale will commence at 1 p.m.
Friday's matchup will be live streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network, and the final two games of the series will be streamed on FloSports. Live stats for all three contests will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Joe Joe Rodriguez will start Friday's series opener. Dylan Johnson will get the ball on Ed Blankmeyer Day on Saturday, and Brandon Backman will take the mound for the home finale on Sunday. Backman is coming off his best outing as a Johnnie, tossing a complete-game shutout on 97 pitches against Seton Hall. The graduate righthander was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first time in his career on Monday. Johnson worked a scoreless inning in the win against Iona on Wednesday.
Tate Ballestero is batting .455 (10-for-22) in his last five starts with four doubles, a home run and six RBIs. The Morristown, N.J., native is now hitting at a .342 clip to pace the Red Storm. Ballestero also leads the team in on-base percentage (.426) and base hits (63) and doubles (16). The redshirt sophomore has now recorded 19 games with two or more hits and is one of three Johnnies with 30 or more RBIs with 32.
The other member of the Red Storm with a batting average better than .300, Kevin Michaels has been the leading run producer out of the cleanup spot, tallying 42 RBIs in 43 starts. The redshirt sophomore leads the Johnnies with a .537 slugging percentage and is tied with Ballestero for the team high in base hits with 21. The Encinitas, Calif., native hit his sixth home run of the season on Sunday in the doubleheader sweep of Seton Hall, good for second on the roster.
A consistent bat in the leadoff spot, Jackson Tucker owns the longest active on-base streak on the team, reaching in 12 straight games after putting together a separate run of 21 straight games. The Staten Island native ranks second behind Ballestero with a .407 on-base percentage and leads the Red Storm with 28 walks. Tucker has been the main running threat on the basepaths for the Johnnies, tallying 14 steals in 17 attempts.
David Glancy has provided tremendous power at the top of the lineup for the Red Storm offense, boasting a team-high 10 home runs, the first Johnnie to hit double-digit homers in a season since Anthony Brocato hit 11 in 2018. Glancy is slugging at a .511 clip which ranks second on the team. Glancy is one of two Johnnies to start all 48 games this season.
Out of the bullpen, Tim Cunningham leads the BIG EAST in appearances with 28 games pitched and owns an ERA of 5.07 to rank third among primary relievers on the Red Storm pitching staff.
Georgetown travels to Queens with an overall record of 28-19 and a conference mark of 7-8.
The Hoyas enter this weekend's series having won four of their last six games, including a win in its most recent matchup with Penn State on Tuesday. Georgetown has won at least one game in every conference series it has played this season.
Sophomore Jake Hyde leads Georgetown on the offensive side, hitting .360 with 17 home runs, a triple, 15 doubles and 49 RBIs. Hyde has tallied 23 games with two or more hits, 10 more than the next closest hitter.
