Three Johnnies tallied an RBI in the series opener
Tate Ballestero continued to swing a hot bat for the Red Storm, tallying his third straight game with an RBI in a 1-for-3 evening at the plate. Kevin Michaels and Austin Machado recorded one and two RBIs, respectively, to round out the Johnnies offense.
The top four batters in the St. John's lineup, Jackson Tucker, David Glancy, Ballestero and Michaels, each scored a run against the Hoyas.
On the mound, five Red Storm pitchers combined to strike out a season-high 15 batters.
The Red Storm (20-28-1, 5-9-1 BIG EAST) jumped on Georgetown starter Nolan McCarthy right away, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to lead, 4-0. Two straight walks set the table for Ballestero, who singled down the right-field line to give the Johnnies their first tally of the evening. Michaels followed up with an RBI double off the left-field wall to double the St. John's advantage, 2-0. Machado's two-RBI single capped off the inning and gave the home side a 4-0 edge.
Georgetown (29-19, 8-8 BIG EAST) threatened in the second, loading the bases with one out, but Rodriguez was able to punch out the next two batters to keep the Hoyas off the board.
After a scoreless third, Georgetown found its first run of the ballgame by way of an Owen Carapellotti to cut the Red Storm lead to 3, 4-1.
The Hoyas trimmed the deficit to two, 4-2, in the fifth when Christina Ficca drew a bases-loaded walk.
Georgetown grabbed the lead in the top of the sixth with five runs to surge in front, 7-4. After an error and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded brought home the game-tying runs, Carapellotti hit a bases-clearing double to stake the visitors to a three-run advantage.
The Hoyas tacked on four more in the top of the seventh to widen the gap, 11-4, courtesy of back-to-back two-out RBI doubles by Christian Ficca and Andrew Bergeron.
St. John's inched closer in the ninth as Hidalgo scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-5 with two outs, but Georgetown was able to squash the comeback attempt and secure the series-opening victory.
The Red Storm and Hoyas will resume the three-game set tomorrow afternoon when the Johnnies will honor six seniors and celebrate Ed Blankmeyer Day. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
