Nick Cirelli hit his sixth home run of the season
Nick Cirelli enjoyed a stellar day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, including his sixth home run of the season.
Chris Conniff also tallied three RBIs in a 2-for4 effort with a run scored. David Glancy notched two RBIs while Kevin Michaels and Austin Machado scored two runs apiece.
Paul Orbon, Jackson Tucker and Colin Wetterau each recorded an RBI in the win over the Hoyas (29-20, 8-9 BIG EAST).
Dylan Johnson earned his third win of the season for St. John's (21-28-1, 6-9-1 BIG EAST), tossing 5.0 innings with four strikeouts.
Before first pitch, the Red Storm honored six seniors, Cirelli, Brian Hendry, Geoff Mosseau, Ian Murphy, David Williams and Wetterau, for all of their contributions to the program in a pregame ceremony with friends and family.
The Johnnies also celebrated Ed Blankmeyer Day as they welcomed back the program's all-time winningest coach to throw out the first pitch.
After a rain delay that halted play in the top of the second, Georgetown struck first when Nolan Matsko took ball four with bases loaded to push across the first run of the afternoon and lead, 1-0.
The Johnnies immediately evened the score at one in the home half of the second. With runners on first and second, Wetterau delivered an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
The Red Storm kept the momentum going in the bottom of the third, adding two runs to march in front, 3-1. Tate Ballestero reached on a Hoya error before Cirelli launched his sixth home run of the season over the right-field bullpen.
Georgetown responded with a run in the fifth to trim the St. John's lead to one, 3-2. Christian Ficca put a ball in play that resulted in a Red Storm error, allowing Jake Hyde to score from second.
The Johnnies quickly restored their multi-run edge with three more tallies in the next half-inning to make the score, 6-2. Three straight batters reached to load the bases with one out for Orbon, who drew a free pass to keep the line moving and bring home a run. Two batters later, Conniff roped a base hit to the gap in left center to score two and push the lead to three.
The Hoyas cut the deficit in half to 6-4 in the top of the sixth. Cam Meyer led off the frame with a triple before scoring on a sac fly by Andrew Ciufo. After two more singles put runners on the corners, Ethan Stern delivered an RBI single to right for Georgetown's second run of the frame.
Cirelli gave the Red Storm some breathing room in the home half of the sixth with a run-scoring base hit to widen the gap, 7-4.
The Johnnies blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs to expand the lead to 11-4. After Machado and Orbon reached to start the inning, Conniff tallied his third RBI of the day with another base hit that found the center-field turf. Tucker followed up with a run-scoring single of his own before Glancy capped off the frame with a two-run double to give the home side a seven-run edge heading into the final two innings of play.
Georgetown quickly tightened things up by scoring four runs in the top of the eighth to get back within striking distance, 11-8.
In the ninth, Sanzio was able to work around an error to secure the victory and set up the Sunday afternoon rubber match.
The final home game of 2022 is set for tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium between St. John's and Georgetown is set for 1 p.m.
