Johnnies hold a 49-8-1 all-time record over the Knights
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 18, 2023) – After a tough conference slate over the weekend, the St. John's baseball team will look to bounce back with a midweek matchup at Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday. First pitch from Naimoli Family Baseball Complex is slated for 3 p.m.
Wednesday's contest will have live stats available on RedStormSports.com and a live stream can be found on NEC Front Row.
St. John's (18-15) is coming off another tight BIG EAST matchup against Seton Hall, seeing an 8-6 victory in the series opener before back-to-back setbacks to end the weekend. Reliever Nick Cirelli continued to be a threat off the rubber, tossing 4.1 innings of work over two appearances and earning his BIG EAST-leading fifth save in the team's lone win. Aaron Mann drove in four of the team's eight runs, smacking a three-run shot, part of a 1-for-1 day that featured two walks, a plunk and a sacrifice fly.
The Johnnies continue to find themselves among the nation's best with a .299 batting average (49th in NCAA). Mann also paces the conference with his .398 mark at the dish (46th) while Cirelli holds the top spot with a 0.85 WHIP (8th), 1.85 ERA (10th) and 7.2 strikeout-to-walk ratio (16th).
Last week, Jackson Tucker did damage against the opposition, slashing .357/.400/.857 with seven RBIs, three runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. The Johnnies' outfielder strung together a pair of three-RBI performances, one against Hofstra and another in his 3-for-5 showing against Seton Hall on Sunday. He also became to first Johnnie in nine years to rattle off two triples in the same game, matching Michael Donadio's total at Hofstra on March 25, 2014.
The Johnnies have been a nightmare for teams in the fourth inning alone, outscoring the opposition 41-9 across 33 games this season. As a team, the Red Storm boasts a .383 batting average with 57 hits, 25 of which have gone for extra bases. The pitching staff has also done a solid job in the frame, holding the opposition to a .158 BAA while allowing just eight earned runs on 18 hits.
The Johnnies will take on FDU for the 59th time in program history, holding a 49-8-1 advantage. The Red Storm are 16-5 in Teaneck, N.J., and have emerged victorious in 28 of its last 29 meetings against the Knights overall, dating back to 1990.
FDU (21-12-1) enters Wednesday's contest having lost three of its last four games, including a pair of setbacks to Sacred Heart over the weekend. Despite the losses, the Knights have been efficient offensively, sitting sixth in NCAA with a .433 on-base percentage while their 8.7 runs per game rank 16th.
Hunter D'Amato has been on a tear this season, slashing .402/.481/.561 with an NEC-best 43 RBIs to go with 35 runs scored. Justin Sierra (24) and D'Amato (19) are also ranked inside NCAA Division I's top 30 for stolen bases, good for 12th and 30th, respectively. As a team, FDU has also tabbed 85 swipes, sitting 12th in the country.
Teammate Luke Cantwell has provided power for the Knights through 32 appearances, smashing 11 of his 30 hits over the outfield fence for a .880 slugging percentage, good for fifth in the nation.
The Johnnies will conclude its four-game road trip in Nebraska when they visit Creighton at Charles Schwab Field Omaha for a three-game set beginning on Friday.
