QUEENS, N.Y. (May 10, 2023) – Fifteen walks propelled the St. John's baseball team to a 13-3 Senior Day victory over Iona on Wednesday evening.
Marty Higgins and Aaron Mann provided power and run support for the Johnnies, each belting their respective fifth homer of the season while adding three RBIs apiece.
David Glancy crossed home plate on three occasions after logging three walks on the afternoon. Tate Ballestero and Austin Machado also tallied two runs apiece on Wednesday.
Starter Andrew Castelluccio picked up his second win in as many starts, allowing one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts across three innings of work on a bullpen day. Vincent Bianchi, Mario Pesca and Tim Cunningham chipped in two strikeouts apiece in relief against the Gaels (11-34).
The Red Storm (24-23) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after loading the bases on three straight walks. Mann drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly to right before an RBI double from Paul Orbon drove in Glancy for a two-tally advantage. Four pitches later, Higgins belted a 1-2 offering over the left-field wall for a three-run shot.
In the second frame, the Johnnies poured it on with a three-spot on the board. Machado brought Ballestero around to score on an RBI groundout up the middle, followed by Glancy crossing a passed ball for a 7-0 lead. Michaels added one more before the end of the frame, knocking an RBI single deep into the shortstop hole for an 8-0 advantage.
After Iona broke through with a one-run top of the third, the Red Storm quickly responded with a two-run homer from Mann, propelling the Johnnies to a nine-run lead, 10-1.
The Gaels tagged St. John's with two more runs in the fourth with an RBI single and a second run scoring on an error, 10-3.
Both teams were held off the board until an errant throw by Iona's third baseman Anthony Zollo allowed Glancy to cross for an 11-3 advantage through five innings of play.
The Red Storm tacked on two more runs in the sixth innings, seeing one score on a double play and another brought around on a Ben Beauchamp single to right for a 13-3 lead.
Cunningham came on in the seventh and struck out Nick Forney to end the game, enforcing the 10-run rule.
The Red Storm will return to action at the Jack on Friday, readying for a crucial three-game series with Xavier. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. in Queens.
