Brandon Bossard notched a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the 11th
For the second time in as many days, the St. John's baseball team erased a late deficit at home, this time scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extras before eventually walking off on a Brandon Bossard double and topping LIU Brooklyn, 11-10, in 11 innings at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Ryan Hogan had a career-day for the Red Storm, going 4-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored, falling a triple shy of the cycle. Hogan had never registered more than two hits in a game or hit a home run before Wednesday.
Wyatt Mascarella, Mike Antico, Mitchell Henshaw and Andrew DuPont all tallied two hits for the Johnnies, who remained undefeated in Queens with the win. Henshaw and Antico scored three times apiece and drove in a run, Mascarella tallied an RBI and DuPont logged a pair of RBI singles after entering the game as pinch hitter.
Bossard, Ryan Markey and Rudy Aguilar all doubled for their only hits of the afternoon. Carson Bartels singled in his only at-bat of the game in the bottom of the 11th.
Gavin Hollowell earned his third win of the season by virtue of a 1-2-3 top of the 11th. Hollowell, Joe Kelly and Brian Hendry combined to throw 3.1 scoreless frames to help the Red Storm erase a three-run LIU advantage.
With two outs and a runner on second in the bottom of the first, Markey doubled to center before scoring on a Henshaw base knock up the middle, quickly putting St. John's ahead 2-0. Next up was Hogan, who doubled over the head of the left fielder to score Henshaw from first and extend the Red Storm lead to three.
LIU answered with two unearned runs in the top of the second, cutting the Johnnies' advantage to one. The Johnnies responded with another run in the home half of the frame, as Antico singled before stealing second and eventually coming around to score on a balk.
The Blackbirds knotted things up with two runs in the top of the fourth before the Red Storm jumped ahead again in the home half. Bossard worked a two-out walk and promptly scored when Mascarella smacked a two-bagger off the wall in right in the next at-bat, giving the Johnnies back the lead at 5-4.
The lead changed again with two LIU runs in the top of the fifth, but the Red Storm worked quickly to knot things up in the home half. Henshaw walked and advanced to second on a Hogan single before coming home on a DuPont base knock, tying the contest at six heading into the sixth.
In the top of the sixth, LIU Brooklyn tallied three hits, including an inside the park homer, to push across two runs and take an 8-6 lead after five and a half.
Hogan cut into the lead in the bottom of the seventh, dropping his first career home run into the St. John's bullpen and trimming his team's deficit to one, 8-7, heading into the eighth.
In that ensuing frame, LIU Brooklyn tacked on two more runs to make it a 10-7 game entering the ninth.
