Mitchell Henshaw launches his first homer of the season
LAS VEGAS (March 6, 2020) – The St. John's baseball team proved unable to dig itself out of an early hole on Friday night, dropping its series opener to UNLV, 6-1, at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Mitchell Henshaw drove in the Red Storm's lone run of the game, smacking a solo shot to left in the top of the sixth. The round-tripper marked the first of the season for the second-year backstop and the fourth of his St. John's career overall.
Justin Folz recorded two of the team's six hits, smacking a pair of singles. Carson Bartels, Jake Lazzaro and Ryan Hogan also tallied base knocks for the Johnnies (3-7), who lost their fifth straight.
Despite settling down nicely over his final four-plus innings of work, Nick Mondak fell to 0-3 on the year. The senior southpaw from Watertown, Conn., allowed four runs, all of which were earned, on 10 hits over 7.0 innings of work, striking out six and walking none. UNLV (4-10) saddled Mondak with all four of his runs in the opening 2.2 innings of action, as he subsequently retired 12 straight UNLV batters between the last out of third and second out of the seventh. Mondak's 7.0 innings of work and 108 pitches, 77 of which were strikes, both set new career-highs.
With one out in the bottom of the first, UNLV logged four straight hits, three of which were doubles, to score three runs and take an early lead over the Johnnies.
In the bottom of the third, UNLV's fourth double of the night brought home its fourth run, as the Runnin' Rebels bumped their lead to 4-0 before the Johnnies had registered a hit.
After three frames without a base knock, Bartels recorded the Johnnies' first hit of the night with a single to left center, but the next three batters went down in order to keep St. John's off the board in the fourth.
Mondak set UNLV down in order in the fourth before Lazzaro added another single in the fifth. Peter Abinanti also walked in the frame, but St. John's left both base runners on base to stay four runs behind.
Following another 1-2-3 frame from Mondak in the fifth, Henshaw put St. John's on the board with a solo shot to left in the sixth, pulling the Red Storm within three, 4-1, after five and a half.
Mondak set UNLV down in order for the third straight inning in the sixth, but the Johnnies were limited to just one hit in the top of the seventh, a single off the bat of Hogan.
The Runnin' Rebels threatened in the home half of the seventh, using back-to-back two-out singles to put runners on the corners. Mondak responded by punching out his sixth batter of the night, ending the inning and keeping the Red Storm within striking distance heading into the eighth.
After Conner Woods struck out the St. John's side in the top of the eighth, UNLV added two insurance runs in the home half of the inning off freshman right-hander Sonny Fauci, increasing its lead to five, 6-1, heading into the ninth.
Folz smacked his second single of the day in the final frame, but it was not enough to keep the Johnnies alive.
The Red Storm and Runnin' Rebels will play game two of their series tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. ET.
