Johnnies score three runs in the final two innings
Trailing by two at the seventh inning stretch, St. John's plated three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to come back and down Albany, 5-4, in midweek action at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Ben Greenberg improved to 2-1 on the season, throwing 2.1 innings of no-hit relief and allowing only one runner to reach base. The Fordham transfer struck out four batters over that stretch.
Ian Murphy started the game on the bump for St. John's, registering five innings of one-hit work with a pair of punch outs. Gavin Hollowell recorded his second save of the season, facing just three batters in a scoreless ninth inning.
Brandon Bossard put forth the best offensive outing of his St. John's tenure so far, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and the game-winning hit in the bottom of the eighth. Mike Antico also tallied two hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Only one of the Red Storm's four RBIs resulted from a hit, as Wyatt Mascarella, Carson Bartels and Colin Wetterau all drove in a run without recording a base knock. Mascarella walked twice to extend his reached-base streak to 21.
Mitchell Henshaw, Brandon Miller and Sean McGeehan also added hits for St. John's. McGeehan's hit went for two bags.
After a pair of scoreless frames to start the game, Albany's Nick Kondo launched a one-out solo shot to left in the top of the third, putting Albany ahead 1-0.
The Red Storm quickly answered in the home half, as Bossard and Antico pieced together consecutive hits to put runners on second and third with one out. Next up was Bartels, who chopped a grounder to third that scored Bossard and knotted the contest at one apiece.
After Murphy twirled a scoreless top of the fourth, the Red Storm added on another tally in the home half to take its first lead of the afternoon. Miller singled to center with one out before a McGeehan double down the left field line gave the Johnnies runners on second and third. Wetterau then stepped to the plate ripped a liner off the pitcher, allowing Miller to score and giving the Red Storm a 2-1 edge.
The Johnnies lost their lead in the top of the sixth, as Albany's Matt Codispoti launched a three-run shot to left to put the Great Danes ahead, 4-2, after five and a half.
The Red Storm pulled back in the bottom of the seventh, plating a pair of runs to knot things up at four. With one out, Bossard walked, Antico singled and Bartels walked in consecutive at-bats to load the bags for Mascarella. The senior poked a slow roller to third that allowed Bossard to score and the other runners to advance, moving St. John's within a run. With the speedy Antico just 90 feet away, a wild pitch scored the junior and tied the game at four.
After Greenberg struck out the side, all swinging, in the top of the eighth, the Red Storm took its decisive advantage in the home half of the frame. Peter Abinanti was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before exiting for a pinch runner, Josh Greene. Following a McGeehan sac bunt and a Wetterau flyout to deep left center, Bossard stepped to the plate with the go-ahead run in scoring position and two gone. The junior infielder ripped a 2-1 fastball into center field, scoring Greene from second and putting the Red Storm on top, 5-4.
Hollowell then allowed a leadoff single before a 4-6-3 double play and a quick groundout back to the pitcher's mound ended the contest.
The Red Storm will return to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting LIU Brooklyn at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
